HIROKI FUJIWARA

Voice

The Day He Decided to be a Team Player

Mr. Fujiwara is masculine with a powerful voice. His name is Hiroki, which is written as “big tree” in kanji characters. He started his career in construction. (Don’t say, “It is obvious!”). He quickly switched jobs to the food and drink industry in his early 20s. “Even though I didn’t want to, I had been working very hard on rebuilding unprofitable restaurants in a company which I joined for no special reason,”
says Mr. Fujiwara, smiling with self-mockery. His gentle eyes tell us that he can be delicate.

”I was in the management division my company before last. I used to be aggressive, but I became tired of it. I realized that hiring people is very hard.”

He worked for a range of companies from small to big that own thousands of chain stores. In each company, he experienced different types of positions, from manager or leader, to a waiter who is interacting with customers. After that, he came across this company. “When I came here, I thought, ‘This is the place I want to be. This must be a suitable place for me now.’

“Mr. Fujiwara thinks this place suits him because of its teamwork.” When I was young I wanted only to be a top player who is good at everything, like pitching and batting. I didn’t care if my team lost. I felt good if I hit a home run (he smiles). Now I have changed my mind. I can be a team player, playing in an assist position and letting my younger teammates play offense. I can play right field, be the eighth batter in the lineup and I can even bunt.  I can take on many positions because winning as a team is the most important thing.”

Mr. Fujiwara realized that he likes to help people to ensure that everything goes smoothly. “I like to create a foundation of things. I hope I can be a bridge between the head office and each branch so that they understand each other well.”

He might be able to see the company more objectively than anyone. I want to ask him, “What do you say about your company?” He says, “This company is very good at playing offense. If it is not moving forward enough and if they think too much about efficiency, the company will not be attractive. However, attractive is not the only thing we are aiming to be. We need to keep a good balance between the two. It is important to respect and discuss with people in charge, because opinions and working methods vary from person to person.” He knows how to be a good leader on the scoreboard, therefore he also understands how to be a good defenseman. That is Mr. Fujiwara’s possibility to improve.

“In construction, there is a blueprint and an end goal to achieve. As you can see, the food and drink industry is different. Especially a small-sized company such as ours is just aiming for high sales. We feel satisfied with making a profit. This is the sixth company that I have worked for. I think every company is different in how they produce results. The more I get into this topic the more I realize how much I don’t know.”

Educating the next generation is his current mission. “We have a lot of young employees who are in their 20s. They are much younger than me, but very polite and kind, and easy to communicate with. They learn very quickly, therefore I enjoy teaching them,”

says Mr. Fujiwara as if he is their big brother.
